In this week’s handle with care, reviewing the Golden Globes, plus a new/old To-Do List entry!
I recently got an email saying the Tumblr blog I started when I was bored in middle school turned 11. Throughout my adolescence and early adulthood, I would be active on it, disappear, and then go back. It’s actually my most accurate digital diary from my formative years! It covers when I was obsessed with YouTubers, then One Direction, and later, fashion. I even went through a phase where I would only reblog things that were red and pink to keep a cohesive theme.
All this to say, the prodigal daughter has returned! (Which I’ve already mentioned here, but still.) And I’m not the only one that missed that silly website. People are slowly going back to it; 48% of Tumblr’s active users are Gen Z. The Fault In Our Stars author John Green recently returned too, except he left after explicit edits were made to his posts, which is still funny IMO.
I recently read this Vogue article, The Case for Returning to Tumblr, and the author talked about “Golden Era Tumblr.” It’s where every aesthetic was born, every insecurity became more significant, every teenage girl discovered Lana Del Rey or Arctic Monkeys, and Kylie Jenner started building her empire. Kalifornia Klasss, baby!!
Trends usually cycle back every 20 years, so we’re about halfway to a real Tumblr renaissance. However, I was shocked to see that many of those era-defining albums are turning 10 this year. We all need to collectively pour one out for Pure Heroine this year!! I remember the trip I took to Best Buy to get physical copies of that, and Modern Vampires of the City so vividly.
There were a lot of good and bad things from Tumblr (and other social media) that influenced me as a teen, but my current iteration is me expressing myself however I want. That’s one of my goals for the year in general, but it’s nice to start somewhere small.
RIP
Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, died after suffering cardiac arrest on Thursday. She was 54. Her last public appearance was just two days earlier at the Golden Globes, where she celebrated Austin Butler’s win for his portrayal of her father in the Baz Luhrmann film.
Coachella’s 2023 lineup is out
Headlining the festival this year are Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, and Frank Ocean, making this their first with all BIPOC headliners.
Miss Flo is Margot
Florence Pugh is on the cover of this month’s Vogue magazine.
The shoot was set in a kitchen, making it soooo The Menu! The publication also had her do a Cooking With Flo video, where she made a “garlicky crostini.” Just handle with care Person of the Year things!!
The Golden Globes were… good?
The ceremony returned on Tuesday, and I will give you a quick rundown. The fashion on the red carpet was a little underwhelming, but I loved Letitia Wright, Jenny Slate, and Hannah Einbinder’s looks. Jerrod Carmichael did a great job hosting, and might have risked his life with a Sc*entology joke. A major pattern during the night were actors that have been in the business for a long time won trophies! Ke Huy Quan, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Coolidge each won awards.
Abbott Elementary won three awards. Angela Bassett won best supporting actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, making her the first Marvel actor to win an award like this. The pianist was mistakenly getting chastised for playing people off, even though it was a track.
Finally, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Gleeson, and Colin Farrell have tested positive for COVID in the days following the ceremony, and won’t be at the Critics’ Choice Awards today.
SAG nominations are out!
Ashley Park from Emily in Paris and Haley Lu Richardson from The White Lotus announced the nominations for this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards this week. The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once tied for the most nominations, with five each.
As for TV, Ozark received four nominations, and in comedy, Barry and Only Murders in the Building lead. I will always ride for Abbott, but I love to see Barry be recognized because the most recent season was just excellent. You can read the complete list of nominations here.
This might mark my first To-Do List repeat: Andrew Garfield is just… doing something to the girls! What more can I say?
The actor is back for awards season, this time in recognition for his work in the limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. He was interviewed for a second time by Chicken Shop Date creator Amelia Dimoldenberg at the Golden Globes. You just need to watch this, and you’ll understand why his name needed to be underlined on the list:
Hi! Have any of you been watching the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race? What do we think about its move to MTV, and how short the episodes are now? I was having a ball during the really long premiere, and now it feels like whiplash with one-hour episodes. Like, if they’re going to be that short, make it ad-free so I can watch the judges deliberating!!
I will be #seated watching Critics’ Choice later, listening to “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, and relishing in the long weekend. I hope you all have a nice day, thanks for reading! 💕
