In this week’s handle with care, Sofia Richie’s wedding and my April favorites.
This year’s CinemaCon was a success considering how last year’s played out! The event, which takes place in Las Vegas, is for the big studios to present footage and stills of upcoming releases, or even whole films. Like how we got the very first look at Barbie last year! A moment still most pleasing to me.
Speaking of Barbie, new footage was shown on Tuesday. According to Variety, there were clips of Margot Robbie as the titular character waking up in a heart-shaped bed, Ryan Gosling dancing as Ken, Barbie paying a visit to Kate McKinnon’s Barbie, perhaps the most important one: Barbie wigging out over her doll-like arched feet going flat.
Robbie, Gosling, America Fererra, and director Greta Gerwig arrived to present:
Gosling also made remarks about doubting his “Ken-ergy,” as one does. I’m excited to see what other stupid things he says on the press tour!
Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet also made an appearance to present Dune Part Two, with director Denis Villneuve calling the first installment an “appetizer,” and the newest one “the main course.” Footage was shown of Chalamet’s Paul riding a sandworm, and Paul and Zendaya’s Chani kissing.
We also got a first look at Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan:
As for other films, Chalamet was also there for Wonka, which is set to release this December. Oprah Winfrey and director Blitz Bazawule debuted a first look at The Color Purple. Fantasia, Danielle Brooks, and Taraji P. Henson were the cast members in attendance. Footage of Jon M. Chu’s Wicked adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande was also shown for the first time. A very exciting time for movie lovers!!
Rihanna is Smurfette
The mogul surprised CinemaCon attendees to announce that she will lend her voice for the upcoming Smurfs movie. According to Deadline, she said she will play “a little blue badass.”
Rihanna will also produce the movie and create original songs. You have to appreciate her dedication to doing anything but her next album.
A broken clock is right twice a day
Sofia Richie married music industry nepo baby millionaire Elliot Grainge last weekend in France. The bride wore several Chanel looks during her wedding weekend, and she looked stunning! And that’s an adjective I don’t use often when I see a Chanel outfit! (We’ll see at the Karl Lagerfeld-themed Met Gala tomorrow.)
I’m one of the many people who are obsessed with her reception look. Chanel recreated a mini dress worn on the runway in 1993 by Claudia Schiffer.
Younger me never quite understood why brides on TLC’s Four Weddings or Say Yes To The Dress would want two dresses. Recently, I started thinking… maybe two wedding dresses is the move! I particularly love the idea of wearing a short dress for a wedding reception.
Anyway, this will probably be thee wedding that will set the trends for the coming years. It’s already inspiring Sofia Richie-old money-marry rich-core TikToks. Which is a step back in feminism, but whatever!
April favorites: TV Edition
In April, I watched a lot of TV. I always do the thing where I add shows I want to watch to my lists, and I never get around to watching them for whatever reason. Take for example, Succession, a show I actually started last year after the third season ended. I thought, “I’ll have soooo much time to catch up before the next one!” But I put it off until a week before the fourth season premiered. And I don’t think it’s a very bingeable show. There’s a lot to absorb, and a lot of business jargon to Google.
I really liked the second half of season two, and the whole third season. I think “DC” is my favorite episode. The current season is living up to the hype for me, and I love watching the Twitter discourse. My favorite moment of the season so far is Kerry’s audition to be an ATN anchor.
She was remarkably awful… and it was fascinating. This Vanity Fair article where they asked MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes for his thoughts on her tape and where Kerry went wrong was a good, quick read. Then, of course, there was “Connor’s Wedding.” The way I was expecting a silly wedding episode and they abruptly kill off Logan!! I was waiting for him to wake up that whole time, and then the episode was over. Emmy awards all around for that one, especially Sarah Snook!
I watched all of Shrinking in about two days on Apple TV+. I liked How I Met Your Mother a lot when I was in high school, mostly for Jason Segel’s character. I liked him so much that on the first day of my 11th grade French class, I said he was my favorite actor during our ice breakers. Nobody knew him, and I wished I had said someone normal like Theo James. In Shrinking, Segel plays a therapist and single father, who is trying to fix his strained relationship with his teenage daughter. It’s a comedy that comes from the people behind Ted Lasso, and I would highly recommend it.
Abbott Elementary’s second season was excellent, and I am enjoying the pacing of Janine and Gregory’s slow burn. Now that their crushes on each other are out in the open, it will be interesting to see how it plays out in the next one. And I also love that both season finales are field trip episodes! Quinta Brunson told Variety that that’s something she wants to try to do every season.
A show I randomly started watching in the middle of their current season was Grand Crew. This show also comes from people behind a show I really liked, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It’s the same kind of humor, except it’s centered around a friend group in LA. I’ll probably watch it all from the beginning on Peacock soon!
I can’t believe tomorrow is already Met Gala Monday… this year is going by so quickly! My fashion favorites will be in next week’s newsletter! Thanks for reading, and I hope you’re having a nice weekend! 💚💕💚
